How to Wear & Tie a Yemeni Izar

A simple, practical guide to wrapping a mens izar the way it has been worn for generations — above the ankle, secure, and in accordance with the Sunnah.

What is an Izar?

The izar is the lower garment traditionally worn by men across the Arabian Peninsula — a long rectangle of cloth wrapped around the waist and legs. The Yemeni izar is woven on narrow handlooms, giving it a distinctive texture and drape that machine-made fabrics cannot replicate.

For the believer, the izar is more than clothing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed that the izar be worn above the ankle, and this guide shows you exactly how to achieve that fit with the traditional wrap.

Step-by-Step: Tying the Izar Above the Ankle

  1. 1

    Hold the cloth at half-length

Stand with the izar unfolded behind your lower back. Grip the top edge with both hands so the cloth hangs evenly on either side. The midpoint should sit at the small of your back.

  2. 2

    Wrap evenly around the waist

Bring both ends forward around your waist. Cross them over your navel, then wrap them around your hips again if the cloth is long enough. The key is to keep the top edge level all the way around — this is what holds the wrap in place.

  3. 3

Raise the hem above the ankle

Before tucking, lift the bottom hem so it sits clearly above both ankle bones. A good measure is roughly a handspan above the ankle — high enough to be safe from dragging, low enough to cover the shin and maintain modesty. This is the defining feature of the Salafi-style izar.

  4. 4

    Tuck and fold the waist

Gather the excess cloth at your waist into neat horizontal folds — two or three depending on the length. Press the fold firmly against your body; the friction of the handwoven cotton against itself is usually enough to hold everything without a belt.

  5. 5

Secure with a simple knot (optional)

If the cloth is very long or you will be walking long distances, tie a loose overhand knot at the front. Do not pull it tight — the izar should sit comfortably and allow a full stride. The knot is merely insurance; the wrap itself does most of the work.

The Sunnah of the Izar

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“The part of an izar which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.”
— Reported by al-Bukhari

Wearing the izar above the ankle is therefore not merely a stylistic choice — it is an act of obedience. Our izars are cut and sized to make this easy: the length is measured so that when wrapped at the natural waist, the hem falls comfortably above the ankle without constant adjustment.

Tips for a Clean Fold

  • Start dry. Wet or freshly starched cotton will slip. Let the izar air-dry completely after washing before wearing.
  • Wrap snug, not tight. You should be able to sit and prostrate comfortably. If the wrap restricts your knees, it is too tight.
  • Check the hem before prayer. Take a moment to lift the izar slightly and verify it is above the ankle before starting salah. This small habit preserves the intention.
  • Pair with a matching scarf. The traditional set includes a rectangular scarf (shawl) draped over the shoulders. It completes the silhouette and adds modesty.

Sizing Your Izar

A standard mens izar is roughly 3.5 to 4 metres in length and 1 metre in width. Taller men or those who prefer more folds at the waist may choose the longer end of the range. The width should be enough to wrap the legs comfortably without gaping.

Our Yemeni izars are sold in two practical lengths. If you are unsure, the shorter length is easier to manage for beginners; the longer length gives a fuller drape and more folds at the waist.
